United States consumer sentiment experienced a slight decline in October 2026, dropping 0.1 points to a reading of 48, according to RISMedia. The final October figure marked a modest decline from the 48.1 index score recorded in September. U.S. News - Money separately reported that consumer sentiment remains near a record low ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. [1][2]

The final reading for October represents an improvement over preliminary data released earlier in the month, RISMedia reported. Economic expectations among consumers remain subdued as ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the Iran war, continue to weigh on the national economic outlook. [1]

The United States and Israel have been engaged in a war against Iran and its regional allies since February 28, 2026, following air strikes conducted on targets across Iran. In broader commercial property sectors, Kingsbarn Realty Capital and Globest both report that multifamily property discounts are attracting buyers, though high return targets continue to hold back capital allocations. [3][4][7]

As FTMQ Real Estate reported earlier, consumer confidence has faced sustained pressure from high prices and elevated borrowing costs. Previous University of Michigan data showed that sentiment dropped to a five-month low earlier in the autumn as conditions for purchasing durable goods deteriorated. [9]
