United States consumer sentiment fell to its lowest level in five months in October, according to data released on Oct. 9. RISMedia, Yahoo Finance UK, Advisor Perspectives, BusinessToday Malaysia, Yahoo Finance, and RVBusiness all report that the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index slipped as consumers expressed mounting frustration over higher costs. [1][2][3][4][5][6]
The index fell to 46.3 in October, down 1.8 points from 48.1 in September, RISMedia reported. Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu noted that while personal finance and business expectations for the coming year rose slightly, buying conditions for durable goods plummeted under the burden of high prices and elevated borrowing costs. Consumer evaluations of purchasing conditions are shaped by income levels, product pricing, and financing constraints. High transaction costs and elevated interest rates directly reduce buying power by imposing added expenses during market trades. [7][8]
