Fed official Beth Hammack cautions low mortgage rates signal economic trouble

Federal Reserve official Beth Hammack warned that mortgage rates dropping to around 3 percent could indicate deeper underlying problems for the US economy.

Federal Reserve official Beth Hammack stated that current Treasury yields remain moderate by historical standards, Business Upturn reported. Hammack warned that if mortgage rates fall back toward 3 percent, it could signal broader economic distress rather than a healthy recovery. Business Upturn, investingLive, Yahoo Finance, and Investing.com all reported her characterization of Treasury yields as modest by historic standards. [1][6][7][8]

While lower mortgage rates generally ease monthly payments and improve home buyer affordability, the underlying causes of a sharp rate decline are crucial to assess, Business Upturn reported. Separate reporting by FXStreet and tmgm.com noted that Hammack sees a higher neutral interest rate and advocates for continued monetary policy restraint. [1][9][10]

The comments follow recent upward pressure on borrowing costs across the housing sector. According to The Economic Times, 30-year mortgage rates recently reached a three-year high driven by long-term US Treasury yields. The Hindustan Times reported that US mortgage rates are nearing 7.5 percent, with rising Treasury yields and fears of Federal Reserve interest rate hikes threatening to push home loan rates toward 8 percent. [2][3][4]

As FTMQ Real Estate reported earlier, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield recently rose 7 basis points to 5.347 percent, its highest level since April 2002. Lenders rely on the 10-year Treasury yield as a primary benchmark to price fixed-rate residential mortgages. The 30-year Treasury yield also surged to 5.702 percent, marking its highest level since May 2002. [14][15]
