Commercial demand for bank loans weakened in the third quarter of 2026 for the first time in more than a year, according to a Federal Reserve survey. Yahoo Finance and Reuters both report that the Fed's Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey revealed a drop in commercial borrowing, driven partly by lower customer investment and competition from rival lenders. [1][2]
Banks participating in the survey reported that decreased capital outlays for plant and equipment contributed to the drop in demand, Yahoo Finance reported. In addition, institutions noted that some business clients shifted their borrowing to alternative nonbank or bank sources offering more attractive rates. [1]
The last time the Federal Reserve survey recorded a decline in commercial loan demand was the second quarter of 2025, Yahoo Finance noted. TradingView and 9News also covered the release of the central bank report. [1][3][4]
