California existing single family home sales declined 6.5 percent year over year in September to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 260,410 units, MPA Magazine reported. Sales dropped 3.4 percent from August, when the state logged an annualized pace of 269,620 units. Borrowing costs increased and affordability constraints persisted, keeping prospective buyers out of the market. [1]

The September figures from the California Association of Realtors marked a continuation of long term low transaction levels. Statewide single family home sales have now remained below the 300,000 unit benchmark for 48 consecutive months. [1]

California was admitted to the Union in 1850 as the 31st state following the 1848 gold discovery at Sutter's Mill. By 2025, the state's gross domestic product reached 4.1 trillion dollars, supported by key regional industries that include technology in Silicon Valley, entertainment in Hollywood, and agriculture throughout the Central Valley. [3]

Housing market fluctuations occur against a broader historical economic backdrop, including the American subprime mortgage crisis from 2007 to 2010. That crisis led to the 2008 financial recession and prompted federal interventions such as the Troubled Asset Relief Program and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. [2]
