Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has called on the Trump administration to release Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from government conservatorship, MPA Magazine and Mortgage Professional America reported. Speaking in an interview on CNBC on Thursday, the chief executive officer of Pershing Square Capital Management stated that ending the conservatorship by the end of 2027 is politically critical for the Republican Party. [1][2]
Ackman suggested that a future Democratic administration could weaponize the two mortgage giants against Republicans if they remain under federal control, according to MPA Magazine. He urged action before the end of the Trump administration in 2028. [1]
Fannie Mae was established in 1938 to expand the secondary mortgage market by securitizing mortgage loans into mortgage-backed securities. Its sister enterprise, Freddie Mac, operates alongside it to support residential mortgage lending. [3]
As FTMQ Real Estate reported earlier, both government-sponsored enterprises have recently deployed automated tools to target income defects and occupancy risk in mortgage applications to reduce loan buyback risks. Fannie Mae has also processed approximately 5.4 million loans through alternative valuation methods. [6]
