Sir George Iacobescu, executive chairman of St John's Wood Square, told an audience of more than 300 people at the Bisnow 10th-anniversary London State of the Market event that developers must act despite current market conditions, Bisnow reported. He stated that development activity is near historic lows and urged industry participants to proceed with projects rather than trying to time the market cycle perfectly. [1]
Iacobescu advised developers that trying to catch the market cycle is ineffective, noting that conditions will never seem entirely right for building, according to Bisnow. He emphasized that industry leaders need to show determination during downturns. [1]
Sir George Iacobescu previously served as the chairman and chief executive officer of Canary Wharf Group, the developers behind the Canary Wharf estate in East London [3]. Shobi Khan succeeded him to run the group, while Iacobescu continues to serve as chairman of the board [3]. [3]
Iacobescu is one of the most prominent Romanian-born businessmen and remains the only Romanian-born individual to receive a substantive British knighthood [3]. His comments come as real estate developers continue to navigate reduced construction volumes across the British capital, Bisnow reported. [1][3]
