Mid-Missouri real estate inventory saw a slight decline in September 2026 as high inflation and elevated borrowing costs pressured the local housing market, KBIA reported. Data shows that the number of residential properties listed for sale during the month was just three fewer than in September 2025. [1]

According to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics cited by KBIA, prices increased by 3.7 percent in the 12 months ending in September. Housing market experts expect these inflationary pressures could drive mortgage rates higher, which would make obtaining inventory more difficult for prospective buyers. [1]

Borrowing costs remain a central challenge for local buyers, particularly individuals attempting to purchase their first home. Mid-Missouri Board of Realtors CEO Brian Tuohy stated that mortgage rates are still elevated and remain above 7.5 percent, KBIA reported. [1]

Missouri is known as the Show-Me State and features geography that includes the Ozark Plateau in the south and rolling plains in the north. [3]
