United States stock indexes rose on Wednesday following the Democratic Party victory in both chambers of Congress during the midterm elections. Yahoo Finance and MarketScreener reported that the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 3 percent to close at 53,356.12. The S&P 500 increased 1.6 percent to reach 7,688.62, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.4 percent to end at 25,736.51. [1][3]
According to Yahoo Finance, real estate was among the top-performing sectors alongside financials and communication services. Consumer discretionary stocks recorded the largest overall gains, while crude oil prices fell following the election results. All market sectors except energy and industrials advanced during the session. [1]
The advance in real estate equities follows earlier market weakness for the asset class. As FTMQ Real Estate reported earlier, real estate and utilities trailed the broader market on October 19, 2026, when the S&P 500 closed at 7,690.73 and trading volumes fell below daily averages. [7]
Bloomberg reported earlier on Wednesday that equity futures had edged higher while investors awaited the midterm election results. Following the outcome, President Donald Trump stated that he will work with the Democratic-controlled Congress, according to Yahoo Finance. [1][2]
