Small markets in Michigan, Florida, and West Virginia earned the highest ratings in the U.S. News and World Report 2027 Best Places to Retire list released on Tuesday. HousingWire reported that Midland repeated as the overall number one market in the nation. The annual report evaluated more than 850 U.S. cities and ranked the top 250 based on six core metrics. [1]
HousingWire Data showed that seven of the top 10 markets are at least 10 percent more affordable than the national average. Furthermore, eight of the top 10 markets feature median home prices below the national median of 430,000 dollars. U.S. News compiled the list using metrics that measured quality of life, affordability, healthcare, retiree taxes, job market prospects, and migration trends among the population aged 55 and older. [1]
The evaluation process also incorporated weightings derived from a public survey conducted in February 2026. Smaller regional markets continue to attract older demographics by offering lower housing entry costs compared to larger metropolitan areas across the United States. [1]
Midwestern cities have previously demonstrated housing resilience. As FTMQ Real Estate reported earlier, Toledo, Ohio, led major American metropolitan areas with a 5.6 percent annual increase in typical home values, reaching 126,270 dollars in February. Lincoln, Nebraska, followed Toledo during that period with a 4.1 percent gain. [2]
